Old Fashioned Chocolate Fudge Pie

Sharing is caring!

Old fashioned fudge pie is like combining the best parts of a gooey warm brownie and chocolate pie into one delicious dessert! This is the easiest pie you will ever make, only taking about 10 minutes to get ready to bake!

If you have a premade pie crust ready, you are 10 minutes away from baking this chocolate lovers dream dessert! This pie uses only a few simple ingredients so no matter what time of year it is, I always have the ingredients on hand to make this old fashioned fudge pie recipe which makes it perfect for both week night dinners and special occasions.

There is no dessert better than a warm, gooey old fashioned chocolate fudge pie. The top of the pie is slightly flakey and crinkled like the top of a brownie but the inside fudgy texture is reminiscent of the warm inside of a gooey brownie fresh from the oven.

Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to cut the sweetness. If you are watching your diet, be careful as this recipe will tempt you to finish the entire pie!

This pie is special to our family as it graced every Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner table at my Nana’s house year after year. As a kid, I wasn’t even aware that there were other pies masquerading around as “chocolate pie.”

Even though I do enjoy most pies, this recipe will always be a family favorite dessert and is very nostalgic for us. In our family, this easy recipe is the only chocolate pie recipe we will ever need!

After one bite of this fudge pie, I bet your family will agree.

Choosing the Best Type of Pie Crust:

This old-fashioned fudge pie recipe can be made using a premade pie crust to keep things short and sweet, but if you’ve been around here for very long at all, you know I always have a stash of homemade butter pie crusts and sourdough pie crusts in my freezer!

Most people have no idea how simple it is to make homemade pie crust, but the added flavor is simply unmatched in store bought versions!

I don’t recommend using a graham cracker crust or other no bake crust for this recipe.

Helpful Kitchen Tools:

Ingredients:

  • Premade pie shell (unbaked)
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 stick of butter or 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 2 eggs (well beaten)
  • 1 tsp vanilla

HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE FUDGE PIE:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Use a stand mixer or a whisk to cream together the room temperature butter and one cup sugar until fluffy.
  3. Next, add in the eggs one at a time and mix until well incorporated.
  4. To the mixture add in 1/4 cup of all purpose flour and mix well.
  5. Slowly add tablespoons of cocoa powder one at a time until fully incorporated.
  6. Add vanilla extract to the chocolate filling mixture. Mix until smooth and creamy, but do not over mix.
  7. Roll out an unbaked pie crust into a well greased pie pan.
  8. Use a rubber spatula to scoop out the chocolate filling. Pour the chocolate mixture into the pie shell.

9. Bake the chocolate pie in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes or until the middle is set and the pie no longer jiggles when moved. Tent with foil as needed to avoid burning the pie crust.

10. Remove the chocolate pie from the oven and allow to cool before slicing. This step is important so that the pie has time to finish setting.

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR THE BEST OLD FASHIONED CHOCOLATE FUDGE PIE:

For an easy dessert that looks fancy, make a decorative pie crust. Use a pie dish with a scalloped edge. Simply fold under excess pie crust or cut it away along the scalloped edge for a beautiful crust.

For the holiday season, use themed cookie cutters to cut out holiday shapes. Place around the edges of the pie crust before baking for a festive homemade crust.

Do not over mix your pie filling, it does not take much time to come together. As soon as the ingredients are all well incorporated, add the filling to an unbaked pie shell.

Variations:

For a thicker pie, double the chocolate pie filling ingredients. Bake in a deep dish prepared crust and adjust time accordingly.

Serve with coffee ice cream instead of vanilla.  Coffee ice cream accentuates the boldness of the chocolate filling.

Many call this a “boat sinker” pie reminiscent of the hot fudge pie recipe that Patti’s 1880’s Settlement serves. Whatever you call it, it is sure to satisfy even the most ravenous sweet tooth.

Serve with cool whip or homemade whipped cream. Top with chocolate shavings for a more elegant look.

Add in a half cup of pecans to the chocolate pie filling. This makes the pie similar to a chocolate brownie with nuts. Serve the pie with caramel ice cream for a delicious chocolate turtle pie.

Preparing the Pie Ahead of Time For Easy Thanksgiving Baking:

Pie crust can be made in bulk and frozen to make holiday preparations simpler. Wrap the pie crust dough in plastic wrap and store in an airtight container in the freezer.

The pie filling can also be prepared ahead of time. Prepare pie filling and store in an airtight container in the fridge the night before baking.

Additionally, you can make the entire pie ahead of time and keep it in the fridge. For best results, bake within a couple days.

    1. I am so sorry, I just realized when I updated my site some of the recipe cards didn’t transfer over right. The time in the post is correct, but not in the recipe card. I have updated it, it should say 30-40 minutes or until the middle is set. My crust always bakes well for me using that time. So sorry about that!
